Helping you feel at home

We are here to help you settle into your new home, meet new people, make new friends and expand your local support network, from the moment you start planning your trip and throughout your entire career.

We encourage international students to consult the Australian Government’s Study Australia website for information on pre-departure information, student arrival plans and other travel advice.

When you arrive

Before arriving in Australia it is important to make sure you are prepared to enter the country. Below you will find information we have gathered about how to best prepare for your arrival in Australia. We recommend you review this information before planning your departure.

When you arrive at an Australian airport, you will first need to go through immigration and customs clearance. A clearance officer will check your travel document and visa, and once cleared you will be able to collect your luggage to go through customs and quarantine clearance processes.

Australia has strict customs and biosecurity laws with tough penalties for travellers who fail to truthfully declare high risk biosecurity goods when they arrive in Australia. Make sure you check the Study Australia website for what you can and cannot bring into Australia.

It is important to know what you need to cross the border. Review the Australian Border Force website to find out what conditions apply.

Photocopy or scan all of your important documents to be safe. You should keep a copy accessible at all times of your passport, visa, bank statements and transport tickets and another copy stored safely in your home country.

We also recommend organising accommodation and airport pick-up or transfer services before you arrive in Australia. Have your accommodation address written in English ready to show the taxi or hire car, or detailed directions if you are using public transport.

More information on what to expect when you arrive at the airport is available at the Department of Home Affairs website.
